21.09.20 Weekly Spellings

ir/ er/ ur

For the first half term, we are aiming to really secure pupils'

understanding of spelling decodable words.

Decodable words are words that pupils can use their phonics to

segment (sound out) and blend (put together)  to

support their spellings.

In class, we use the following steps when spelling words.

The Power of Reading

What an amazing start to the week!

Today we watched 9-year-old Luke deliver a TedTalk on ‘The Power of Reading’.

Watch the video with your child and discuss their thoughts to join in our class discussion.

Our children were so inspired by Luke that they stood up to give their own inspirational speech on why reading is so powerful!

Origami Heart

Welcome to our wonderful new Year 3’s!

What a fantastic first day we have had with you all!

We have ‘Dough Discoed’, started to make new friends and explore our new classroom during ‘Connection Time’ and this afternoon, we created origami hearts to show our loved ones at home that we were thinking of them. We used the book 'The Invisible String' to talk to the children about leaving people who we love. Read the book here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJNwqtr8Oww

Tonight, we have sent the children home with another sheet of origami paper to share their new skills. Create a new heart with your child and send them to school with it tomorrow so that they can keep your heart close to theirs.

Watch Miss Robinson’s video to make your own with your child! We can’t wait to see them.

Final English Task: Letter writing

Good morning Year 3

Our English blog looks a little different this week. We have posted four lessons on one page. You can still complete each lesson on a different day, just like we would do in school.

For our final four lessons of English, we are going to work towards writing a letter to your new teacher.

This week you will find out who your Year 4 teacher will be and they are both so amazing!

We are going to write them a letter to let them know a little bit about you and ask any questions you might have. Even though you don't know who your new teacher is yet, we can still start a letter and include their name at the end of the week.

Lesson 1

LO: To write statement sentences

A statement is a sentence that declares a fact, an opinion or an idea. It starts with a capital letter and usually finished with a full stop.

You will receive a teacher profile in your report pack, where your teachers have written five facts about themselves.

Well… your new teachers want to know about you too!

Task

Can you write five facts in full sentences about yourself? Can you include conjunctions to join your statement sentences together?

Example
I have a cat called Meredith and I have one brother who is 25 years old.

Lesson 2

LO: To write question sentences

Time to think about what you want to know.

Do you have any questions about Year 4 for Mr Hissey or Mr Deakin?

A question sentence is a sentences that usually requires a response. It starts with a capital letter and finishes with a question mark. ?

Task
Please write 5 questions you would like to ask your new teacher.

Example
Will I have P.E with Coach Callum in Year 4?
What will we learn about in Year 4?

Lesson 3

LO: To draft a letter

Time to start planning your letter.

It has been a long time since we wrote a letter. Can you remember what it needs to start with?

Task
Can you complete the sentences to create a short letter to your new teacher?

Dear ______

My name is ________

First of all, I would like you to know that I _________

Next, I would like to ask you about _______

From _________________

Lesson 4

LO: To re-write a letter

Time to complete your final polished piece.
Expand your short sentences to include all the facts you would like to share about yourself and at least 3 questions you have for your next teacher.

Let’s check your toolkit.

Can you use..?
·        Capital letters and full stops
·        Conjunctions
·        Adjectives
·        Accurate spellings
·        Statement sentences
·        Question sentences
·        Best handwriting
·        Correct letter format

If you email your learning to year3@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk, we can pass this to your new teacher.

Mental Maths Monday - 13th July

Hi year 3,

Here is your arithmetic quiz for today. Here are some tips for the tricky questions:

Q6. Be careful with this addition - there is an exchange in the tens column.
Q13. You might want to do 27 divided by 3 and then make the answer 10 times bigger.
Q14. Find 1/4 by dividing by 4 and then multiply the answer by 3. You could also use a bar diagram to help you.
19. The are two exchanges in this addition calculation.

Good luck. I will put the answers up in a few hours.

Dance and Music Festival

Hill Top needs your help!

Monday the 13th of July marks the beginning of our Trust Dance and Music Festival.

We know how talented you all are and we want to share that!

This will be our last week of Summer term and what better way to lift spirits than a good song and dance!

You can film yourself singing, dancing or playing a musical instrument at home.
Then please email it to your year group email address.

Look out for your videos on Facebook throughout the week, so we can showcase all of our pupils' talents!

English - Final section

Today we are going to write the FINAL SECTION to your story!

Good Luck!
______________________________________________________________________

At a signal, the others ran towards it, yelling and throwing their

spearsOm and I didn’t have spears, but we yelled anyway. It was

so exciting! A spear caught the reindeer in its side, and it fell to the

ground. I shouted at Om to run and turned to face the bear with my

spear. I felt very small. Suddenly the ground gave way… and I found

myself falling down, down, down.
______________________________________________________________________

At a signal, the blue creatures hurtled towards it, yelling and casting

their nets. Chaz and the old man didn’t have nets, but were yelling

at the giant anyway. The old man hadn’t felt so alive in years!

Even though the net wasn’t big enough, the yelling startled the giant

and it started to run towards them! The old man shouted at Chaz

to get out of the way, then started to run towards the giant

screaming and waving his fists! He felt very brave. Suddenly the

ground gave way … and he found himself falling down, down

down…

______________________________________________________________________

Instead I found I was back home. When I told my family what had

happened, they didn’t believe me. They said I’d only been gone a few

hours and I must have fallen asleep and dreamt it.

______________________________________________________________________

Now, the old man found himself back in his sweet shop. When he

told his customers what had happened, they didn’t believe him. They

said he had only been gone for a few hours and he must have

fallen to sleep and dreamt it.

______________________________________________________________________

Years passed but I never forgot my friend Om. I am an archaeologist

now (that’s me in the glasses.) Everywhere I go, I look in the past

for signs of Om. And I never stop learning from her people.

______________________________________________________________________

Weeks passed but the old man never forgot his friend Chaz. He

invented a new type of fudge that was loved by adults and children

alike. People travelled across the country to try the delicious fudge

and the old man was finally surrounded by friends.
