Your Stories So Far

Toby and Ryder - Adventure Stories

WOW! I have been so blown away by Ryder and Toby's creativity with their stories! I am so proud of you both and I just had to share!

Feel free to leave Toby and Ryder a comment to let them know what you are enjoying about their stories so far.

Amazing work boys! These are going to be great adventure stories when they are finished!

From Miss Robinson

English - Writing an Adventure Story

Today, you are going to use the original text 'A Stone Age Boy' to write your own adventure story using your planning.

It is helpful to do this on a computer, but you can write it too. All you need to do is read the original story out loud then changed little bits at a time.

FOR EXAMPLE: BLACK - original story. GREEN - Miss Robinson's new story

The parts highlighted in yellow are the parts that I have changed.

STONE AGE BOY

THE SWEET SHOP GRANDPA

An amazing thing once happened to me. I was wandering in the

woods when I tripped and found myself falling down, down, down.
______________________________________________________________________

An incredible thing once happened to an old, grumpy, sweet shop

owner. He was working late in his ancient, desolate sweet shop one

night when suddenly he was sucked into a jar of peppermint swirls

and found himself spinning round, round, round!
______________________________________________________________________

When I woke up, I was in a cold, dark place. I could see daylight in

the distance and I stumbled towards it. Outside, everything was

different. I realised I was lost. Completely lost. So I walked and

walked and walked…
______________________________________________________________________

When his eyes finally opened, he was in a bright, colourful world.

He could see pink, candyfloss-like clouds in the distance and so he

rose, and limped towards them. Before him, everything was strange

and different. He realised that we was lost. Completely lost. So he

walked and stumbled and shuffled through this new world

Just work on these two opening paragraphs today! I can't wait to read them 😃

Art Challenge - Optical Illusions

Hi year 3,

Optical illusions are images or pictures that can 'trick' your brain into seeing something in a different way than it appears. Here are some examples of optical illusions:

This pattern appears to move if you stare at it.

This pictures of two old people's face has other pictures inside it:

In this video lesson the art teacher shows you how to create your own optical illusion pattern:

Good luck creating you optical illusions and don't forget to e-mail your finished pictures to:

Science - Monday 29th June (Trees)

Hi year 3,

Last time we look at pollinators, which are animals that help plants to reproduce and grow by spreading the seeds (pollen).

Today we are going to look at a special type of plant - TREES. Trees are PERENNIAL plants, which means they last for several years. Many flowering plants last for just one year or season.

As a fairly easy warm-up I would like you to label a diagram of a tree with its key parts. If you don't have a printer you could draw the tree yourself and label it.

Identifying Trees

Just like there are many types of flowering plants, there are also lots of different types of tree. Here are some of the common types of tree found in the United Kingdom. These include:

Beech
Oak
Silver birch
Ash
Lime
Horse Chesnut
Rowan
Hawthorn
Field Maple
Sycamore
London Plain

It is useful to know what some of these trees look like. I will put some pictures below and your task is:

1. Identify the tree and write the correct name.
2. Sketch a leaf from that tree.
3. Write a fact about the tree e.g. how tall they can grow, how long they live, what the seeds look like etc...

Tree 1
Tree 2
Tree 3
Tree 4

Tree 5

Tip - all of the trees are from the list above. If you are really stuck use the tree guide here:

Adventure Story Planning 26.06.20

In today's English lesson, we are going to start describing the characters that we innovated earlier in the week.

Create a mind map for each character and write adjectives, phrases and notes around to get some ideas flowing!

See my example:

22.06.20 Adventure Story Planning

Planning your own Adventure Story!

This week we are going to be innovating 'The Stone Age Boy' to create a brand new story! When we are innovating, we begin by changing some key elements from the original story.

Today we are going to change:

The main character
Om
The setting (Stone Age)
Things that happen
How they return

See Miss Robinson's innovation below.

My story is going to the called:

The Sweet Shop Grandpa

Can you see what my story will be about?

Now it's your turn.
You can either draw the table and complete with your own ideas OR log onto Teams, look in 'Files' and download the document 'My Innovation' to create your own plan on the computer like I have done!

Wednesday 24th June - Maths (Angle Types)

Good morning year 3,

I hope you were able to give yesterday's maths lesson on angles a good try. Today's lesson focuses on compare the size of different angles.
Year 3 - Week 9 - Lesson 2 - Compare angles from White Rose Maths on Vimeo.

Here are worksheets for today. The two main pieces of vocabulary you need to remember here are:

1. What an acute angle is.
2. What an obtuse angle is.

Art - Wednesday 24th June (Texture Rubbings)

Hi year 3,

We haven't had many art challenges recently, so I though it would be a good opportunity to improve our art skills over the next few weeks.

This lesson involves you collecting objects with an interesting texture from around the home and creating a RUBBING on to paper using a pencil.

Here is a video demonstration:

Activity:

Create some texture rubbings of surfaces from around your home. You should be able to fit multiple rubbings on the same page. You could also label them with the name of the surface you use for the rubbing, like this example:

Tuesday 23rd June - Science (Plants and pollinators)

Hi year 3,

In this lesson we will look a pollinators. A pollinator is an animal (often an insect) which helps to spread the seeds (pollen) from plant to plant. Watch the following video, which will help you further understand how pollinators work:

Challenge 1 - Research different pollinating animals and sketch 3 of them. For example:

Hummingbird

Challenge 2 - Complete the following questions about pollinators.

1. Sort the following animals into the table below.

Bee                                mouse                               elephant                         domestic cat

butterfly                        eagle                                  ant                                 midge

2. Flowering plants are often brightly coloured and have a sweet scent (smell). How do you think this helps to attract pollinators?

3. Pollinators play an important role in helping plants to grow and reproduce. Some pollinators are endangered however. For example, bees are excellent pollinators, but have started becoming endangered in recent years. Research why bees are becoming endangered and what is being done to help them survive.

Tuesday 23rd June - Maths (Right Angles)

Hi year 3,

I hope you are all well. This week's maths will focus on lines, angles and shape. Today's lesson examines right angles and how certain shapes contain right angles within them. Here is the video lesson:
Year 3 - Week 9 - Lesson 1 - Right angles in shapes from White Rose Maths on Vimeo.

Here are the lesson worksheets. If you are unable to print out the sheets, you could try drawing the shapes or lines with a ruler or straight edge.

Good luck!

Pre-History - Lesson 2: Timelines

Today you will be using a timeline to order events from the Stone Age.
Click the image below to watch a video introduction to the topic. Timelines can be quite tricky to understand.

Just remember - BC 'Before the Birth of Christ'

AD - 'After' the Birth of Christ

If a date is 'BC' - the bigger the number, the further back in time

If a date is 'AD' - the smaller the number, the further back in time

Draw a time line and order the events on the cards.

Stone Age Topic Starter

Whenever we start a new topic, we begin by thinking about what you already know about the topic and what questions you would like to find out.

TASK 1: WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?

Today, we would like to to bring together any knowledge that you have about the Stone Age. You could write a list, create a poster or put together your ideas on the computer.

TASK 2: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DISCOVER?

Now think about what you would like to find out. Create a list of questions and either post as a comment on the blog or send your questions to Miss Robinson and Miss Vardy.

Example: What did people in The Stone Age eat? Did everyone look the same? Where did they come from? Where in the world did the Stone Age take place? How was life different? Does everyone believe in the Stone Age?

22.06.20 Mental Maths Mondays

Hello Year 3!

Today you are working through the Arithmetic Tests. Take note of any questions you find difficult. If you email myself or Miss Vardy we can plan some more work to support you with this.
