01.05.20 Eng Day 29 Spelling

Spelling

Day 5: Test yourself!

See if you can write out the spelling words from your memory or ask a grown up to read them out, so that you can write them down.

Mark your answers using a different coloured pen. If you spell a word wrong, don't worry, this is how we learn! Rewrite the word using your pen. You could focus on this word next week!

30.04.20 Maths Day 25 - Multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit numbers

STARTER

Add the next three multiplication sentences to your counting stick.

Can you cover some of them with a piece of paper and still complete your 'Chant Its'?

WARM UP  - Time Yourself!

PARENT WARNING: The strategy in this lesson is not what us adults were taught at school (it's all so different isn't it?). However, it is a wonderful way of helping our children to understand what is happening in the calculation - it will also support them tomorrow in trickier problems. I have broken it down into small steps but if you would like anymore support please get in touch. Miss Robinson = )

Understanding Multiplication through Pictorial (picture/drawing) Methods

GUIDED MODEL: 13 x 3
You will need:
  • a piece of paper
  • a pen/pencil
  • Two coloured pens/ pencils (when drawing your tens and ones)

  1. 1.  Split your paper in half and label one side 'Pictorial’ (This is where you draw what the calculation looks like). Label the other side ‘Calculation’

2. In the pictorial side, draw a place value grid and in the calculation side, write out the calculation that you are going to solve (this is called Formal Written Multiplication)
Don't forget to leave a gap for any exchanges (tomorrow's lesson)

 3. 13 x 3 simply means "13, three times" or "three lots of 13" or "13+13+13" so notice that I have three sections in my place value grid.

4. You know that you need three lots of 13. So split your place value grid into three sections, and in each one, draw the number 13 using your coloured pencils.

Can you see how I have drawn 13 three times?
5. Now you can solve by adding the ones then adding the tens

6. Notice in the calculation side, we multiplied the ones (3 x 3) and placed the '9' in the ones column.
We then multiplied the tens column (10 x 3) and place the 30 underneath.

YOUR TURN (the number of groups tells you how many sections to draw in your place value grid)

CHALLENGE

Can you create a Maths Story for one of the calculations that you have solved today? Don't forget to share your amazing work with us!

30.04.20 Eng Day 28 Spelling

Spellings

Day 4: Today you are going to write some silly sentences using your spellings!

TASK: Put every spelling word into a sentence. It can be as silly or as sensible as you like.

To make it trickier, you could use more than one spelling word in every sentence. You could also think of more than one sentence for every word.

E.g. The dinosaur heard a piece of fruit say "hello".

Enjoy being silly!

29.04.20 Maths day 24 - Multiplying by multiples of 10

STARTER

Add the next three multiplication sentences to your counting stick.

Can you cover some of them with a piece of paper and still complete your 'Chant Its'?

WARM UP
Draw and complete the multiplication wheels.

MULTIPLYING BY MULTIPLES OF 10

When multiplying by multiples of ten, remember to use the multiplication you know, then make it ten times bigger.

Click the images to see examples.

YOUR TURN: Now can you solve the multiplications below, representing each using groups, bar model and a calculation, just like in the examples?

Great job! Now you have practised, solve the challenges below. Can you just use the calculation to solve this time?

REVIEW: 1. What did you notice about each challenge?
            2. What stayed the same? What changed? Why?

29.04.20 Eng Day 27 Spelling

Spelling

Day 3: Rhyming words
Think back to last week's poetry. Remember- rhyming words have the same end sounds.

TASK: Write out your spellings and think of as many rhyming words as you can for every spelling.

E.g. heard= bird, word, purred, third

These words rhyme, even though they do not have the same end spelling. You might have to check how to spell your rhyming words, using a dictionary or google!

28.04.20 Maths Day 23 Investigating 6 times tables

Starter

Add the next three multiplication sentences to your counting stick.

Can you cover some of them with a piece of paper and still complete your 'Chant Its'?

Today: Follow along with Miss Robinson's video 'Investigating the Six Times Tables'. You will need paper, and pen and a different coloured pencil or highlighter.

EXTRA CHALLENGE: Can you further investigate the prediction in the video by rolling a die twice to create a number then multiply that number by six?

EXAMPLE:

23 x 6 =

20 x 6 = 120

3 x 6 = 18

120 + 18 = 138

Does this answer fit our prediction?

28.04.20 Eng Day 26 Spelling

Spellings

Day 2: Repetition
A great way to remember your spellings, is to write them out many times.

TASK: Write out your spellings again. You will need to write out every word ten times.

You could do this in different ways
Write the words using different coloured crayons or felt tips.
Write the words using a cool font or bubble writing.
Write the words in different places e.g. on coloured paper, whiteboards, using chalk outside (with adult's permission).
Try writing out the words with your eyes closed!

The more you write them, the easier it will be to remember the spellings.

27.04.20 Reading Challenge

Reading Challenge

Teachers across school have been reading stories for you to enjoy, but we have also been enjoying reading our own books in our spare time.

We would love to see how you have been keeping up with those reads! As a reading activity for this week, we would like you to do one of the following. If you are super motivated, you could choose more than one!
  • Ask a grown up to film you reading part of your favourite book and send it to year3@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk
  • You could write a sequel to a book! This would be like a second part to the book, it might explain what happens next to the characters!
  • Be the teacher- you could write your own comprehension questions about a book and ask someone else to answer them.
  • Be dramatic- you could act out different books and see if anybody can guess the book you have chosen.
  • Create a character profile for one of your favourite characters (click to enlarge).

  • Retell the story by creating a comic strip (click to enlarge).

  • Write a book review about your favourite book. You could use some of these templates for ideas (click to enlarge).

Remember to keep reading at least 3 times a week! Well done Year 3!

27.04.20 Maths Day 22 - Learning 6 times tables

Today we are going to practise our 6 times tables facts.

When we learn our times tables in class, we use our counting stick. This is a ruler with 12 coloured divisions like the one you see below.

We learn three multiplications each day, practise them and play games just focusing on those three. This means that by learning a few facts at a time, we are making sure that they stay put in our long term memory!

EXAMPLE

Day 1: We learn 1 x 6, 2 x 6, 3 x 6

TASK 1: Can you create your own counting stick to use this week? You could draw the counting stick on a piece of paper and Bluetac it to a wall (ask adults first) or you might find a good stick that you could paint on one of your walks! You might even like to create a counting stick using Powerpoint.

TASK 2: Can you write the fact families for each multiplication sentence

e.g.    4 x 6 = 24

TASK 3: Can you find the multiplication sentences in the calculation search below?
EXTRA CHALLENGE: Can you create your own calculation search for the six times table?

27.04.20 Eng Day 25 Spelling

Spellings

Happy Monday Year 3!

This week, we will be practising our spellings.

I have chosen 10 words from our list of common exception words. If you feel confident with these after practising, you could choose some more from the list (click to enlarge).

Focus spellings:
appear
breath
build
disappear
fruit
guide
heard
heart
increase
learn

Day 1: Understanding
Before we know how to spell a word, we need to make sure we understand it's meaning.

TASK: Create your own dictionary! You will need to write out every word and explain what it means. You could also draw a picture to help with your explaination.
