TASK 1:
One of the main features in a poem, is rhyme.
Watch the video below for a quick explanation of rhyme (you only need to watch up to 2.20 mins).
The 3 types of rhyme:
End rhyme-When the words that rhyme are at the end of a line. E.g.
It was a fearsome sight,
His teeth were shining white.
Internal rhyme- When the rhyming words are on the same line. E.g.
I can rhyme in the same line.
Near rhyme- When 2 words sound similar but are not perfect rhymes. E.g.
The dentist was weeping in despair,
He cried, "I see them all well from here!"
CHALLENGE: Can you find the 3 types of rhyme in 'The Dentist and the Crocodile'? It might not have all 3!
TASK 2:
Another feature of poetry is repetition. This is when words or phrases are repeated more than once.
Can you find any examples of repetition in the poem? Write these in your books.
TASK 3:
Answer these questions in your book:
What do you notice about the structure of the poem?
How are the lines organised on the page?
Where are most of the rhyming words on each line?
Poems are written in 'stanzas'. This is what we call paragraphs in poetry.
