Tuesday 23rd June - Science (Plants and pollinators)

Hi year 3,

In this lesson we will look a pollinators. A pollinator is an animal (often an insect) which helps to spread the seeds (pollen) from plant to plant. Watch the following video, which will help you further understand how pollinators work:

Challenge 1 - Research different pollinating animals and sketch 3 of them. For example:

Hummingbird

Challenge 2 - Complete the following questions about pollinators.

1. Sort the following animals into the table below.

Bee                                mouse                               elephant                         domestic cat

butterfly                        eagle                                  ant                                 midge

2. Flowering plants are often brightly coloured and have a sweet scent (smell). How do you think this helps to attract pollinators?

3. Pollinators play an important role in helping plants to grow and reproduce. Some pollinators are endangered however. For example, bees are excellent pollinators, but have started becoming endangered in recent years. Research why bees are becoming endangered and what is being done to help them survive.
