15.05.20 Maths Day 32

Subtracting money

Today you are going to have a go at subtracting money. Have a look at the worked example below.

£3.50 - £2.10 =

1. Draw the amount of money that we are starting with. In this question, it is £3.50

2. Now we need to take away the second amount. In this question, this second amount is £2 and 10pence. First, we will subtract the pounds. Subtract £2.

3. Then, we need to subtract the pence. In this question, we need to subtract 10 pence.

4. HAZARD CHECKER! We cannot subtract 10 pence from a 50 pence coin. Therefore we need to draw 50 pence in a different way.

5. We can now easily subtract 10 pence.

6. Count up how much money you have left. First count the pounds, then count the pence.

We know that £3.50 - £2.10 = £1.40

Have a go at answering the questions below, using this method. You could draw the coins or use actual coins if you have them!

1. £4.60 - £3.20
2. £6.90 - £4.40
3. £8.65 - £3.10
4. £9.76 - £5.32
5. £10.28 - £7.15
6. £8.91 - £8.51
7. £5.04 - £3.00
8. £6.09 - £5.82

Day 5: To write your story
Today you are going to write up your story! You have already created some super sentences and mapped out where they will go in your story.
Before you start writing, have a think about what will be in our success criteria...

Floating gently through the clear blue sky, Tommy stared ahead, hoping he would reach his destination soon. The clouds were endless, covering the horizon as far as the eye could see.

He had set off with a dream but didn’t know if it would come true. As the clouds parted, he could not believe what he could see…

We can't wait to hear how your stories end! Once you have finished writing, you could add an illustration and send it to year3@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk.

13.05.20 Eng Day 36 Story Writing

English

Day 3: To use powerful verbs to describe

Yesterday, you created expanded noun phrases using interesting adjectives. Today, you are going to focus on verbs to describe what the objects in the picture are doing. If you're up for the challenge you may also include adverbs and maybe some similes!

Below, there are 4 different sentence levels.

Sentence Level 1: Noun and adjectives

E.g. The clouds were soft and fluffy.

Sentence Level 2: Noun, adjectives and verb

E.g. The huge house flew past the soft, fluffy clouds.

Sentence Level 3: Noun, adjectives, verb and adverb

E.g. Slowly, the huge house flew past the soft, fluffy clouds.

Sentence Level 4: Noun, adjectives, verb, adverb and simile!

E.g. Slowly, the huge house flew like a kite, past the soft, fluffy clouds.

TASK: Use the expanded noun phrases from yesterday to create some super sentences. You will need to create 5 sentences about the picture. Challenge yourself to write at a high sentence level!

REMEMBER: We will be writing a story on Friday. Stories need to be descriptive so that the reader can picture what is happening. The more interesting adjectives, verbs and adverbs you use, the better your story will be!

13.05.20 Maths Day 30 - Estimating the Cost

Estimating The Cost

TASK: Below are the cost of items available at a local café. You have a budget of £30. What could you buy for your money? Write the items, estimate the cost and calculate the actual cost. How many different combinations of items can you find?

1.     Draw a table and split into three columns ‘Food’, ‘Estimate’ and ‘Actual Cost’
2.   Choose three foods to purchase and write in the ‘Food’ column (take care not to choose three expensive foods)
3.   In the ‘Estimate’ column, make a sensible guess of what the food will roughly cost.
4.   In the last column, calculate the actual cost using compact column method.

TIP: Adding lots of 99p’s can be tricky to calculate! You could always add a penny then subtract from the total.

EXAMPLE: £3.99 + £4.99 would be tricky to solve using compact column.
INSTEAD: Add £4 and £5 then subtract 2p.
                   £4 + £5 = £9
                   £9 – 2p = £8.98
SO               £3.99 + £4.99 = £8.98
