15.05.20 Maths Day 32

Subtracting money

Today you are going to have a go at subtracting money. Have a look at the worked example below.

£3.50 - £2.10 =

1. Draw the amount of money that we are starting with. In this question, it is £3.50

2. Now we need to take away the second amount. In this question, this second amount is £2 and 10pence. First, we will subtract the pounds. Subtract £2.

3. Then, we need to subtract the pence. In this question, we need to subtract 10 pence

4. HAZARD CHECKER! We cannot subtract 10 pence from a 50 pence coin. Therefore we need to draw 50 pence in a different way.

5. We can now easily subtract 10 pence.

6. Count up how much money you have left. First count the pounds, then count the pence.

We know that £3.50 - £2.10 = £1.40

Have a go at answering the questions below, using this method. You could draw the coins or use actual coins if you have them!

1. £4.60 - £3.20
2. £6.90 - £4.40
3. £8.65 - £3.10
4. £9.76 - £5.32
5. £10.28 - £7.15
6. £8.91 - £8.51
7. £5.04 - £3.00
8. £6.09 - £5.82
