Estimating The Cost
TASK: Below are the cost of items available at a
local café. You have a budget of £30. What could you buy for your money? Write the
items, estimate the cost and calculate the actual cost. How many different combinations of items can you find?
1. Draw a table and split into three columns ‘Food’,
‘Estimate’ and ‘Actual Cost’
2. Choose three foods to purchase and write in
the ‘Food’ column (take care not to choose three expensive foods)
3. In the ‘Estimate’ column, make a sensible
guess of what the food will roughly cost.
4. In the last column, calculate the actual
cost using compact column method.
TIP:
Adding lots of 99p’s can be tricky to calculate! You could always add a penny
then subtract from the total.
EXAMPLE:
£3.99 + £4.99 would be tricky to solve using compact column.
INSTEAD:
Add £4 and £5 then subtract 2p.
£4 + £5 = £9
£9
– 2p = £8.98
SO £3.99 + £4.99 = £8.98
